Elegant Metal Tutorial Copyright 2013 LlemonFlame a.k.a. Dorte Andersen

License: Personal use only. You're free to use this tutorial as you wish, as long as it's for personal use only. Do not sell the layer effect styles, and the Metal Effect Contour from this tutorial. The rest is yours to do with as you please.
If you're interested in buying a license for commercial use of the layer effect styles, let me know.

I wanted to do something different from other metal text tutorials, I wanted to make a layer effect style which looks best using thin, detailed and elegant looking fonts, using text layer effect styles without use of pattern overlay.
In This Photoshop tutorial you will learn how to make a metal effect using different layer effect styles, the contour editor, the gradient editor, the brush tool and the path tool.

Download to get it in the real size.

Enjoy!

I honestly don't know, I've only tried it in CS6 and I know that CS5 is quite similar to CS6 so there shouldn't be a problem with CS5. So I guess that leaves you with having to try and see if it works... Let me know if it does!

Best wishes,

I will and if it works, I'll post it in my gallery. Might just be the ticket to get me back to using Photoshop like I used to (Back in the days. )

Ran out of ideas and inspiration and got hooked on to 3D... Was in art school when I took up Photoshop, Illustrator and 3D Max. Now I'm retired and wanted to do more people type of renders. Still use Photoshop to do post work but not pure art work, if you know what I mean? ;)

Ah, well I understand the lure of 3D, I've dabbled with that as well, but that was back in the day when I had an Amiga (using Deluxe Paint to do graphics in), then I got a PC and eventually discovered Photoshop. Proud Cloud member now. :D You're really good at the 3D work, such details must take a long time and patience to do?

Have a great weekend!

Sometimes it does take a long time and patience but that depends on the nature of the work. I once did a very "seemingly" simple render over a 10 days span. It came out ok, but I'll never do that again.

I remember Deluxe Paint and Amiga. Wanted to get Amiga but couldn't afford it at the time. Instead I went with Tandy 1K and the rest is history.

Wow, 10 days! No wonder you didn't do that gain, that's a looong time to wait for a result!

I got my Amiga computer as a b-day present from my parents (I was 17 back then) -- never heard of Tandy 1K? Nice talking to ya! :)

I'm a little confused at the wording. So, if I use this tutorial, I cannot use the elegant metal effect in a commission?

Or am I not allowed to take this tutorial you made and sell it to people?

Sorry I don't understand. ^^;

You're not allowed to use the effect commercially, i.e. don't use the elegant metal effect in something you intend to sell/earn money from. You're not allowed to sell the effects, the background, everything in this tutorial.

It's meant to teach people how to do things, *not* to learn how to make the effects and then selling them afterwards. The same thing goes for the tutorial itself of course.

If you're interested in buying a license that allows you to use the effect commercially (just not reselling it) let me know.

I hope that clarifies things? If not do ask again. :)

Best wishes,

No offense, but I don't know if you are allowed to say that people can't use the effects of something even if they follow a tutorial. Not unless you made the actual scripting or stock for the effects. Which you haven't. This looks like you are just using scripting already available in certain image editors.

They ARE allowed to use it, just as long as they don't sell the layer effects as their own original work. I spent a long time creating them (and much longer to write the tutorial) so yes, I do own the copyright. What is scripting BTW? I've made this in Photoshop, manually every step of the way.

That is what I am talking about. I don't think that the copyright is support for even commercial use. I think anyone can use this without paying.

So I'll ask you the same question as rodtheworm: That leaves the question how people can sell Layer effects? Surely they can't sell something they don't own then?

The only way you can sell the effects is if you have scripted them yourself. You can script effects for photoshop, but if I am right that requires knowledge to code.

I know you can script things in Photoshop to use in CSS for instance, but that's a whole different area.

Fair point - I don't think you can copyright a group of settings on a program you don't own, just the tutorial itself.

Still, really pretty effect - it certainly lives up to the "Elegant Metal" name! I'll have to see if I can recreate this effect in GIMP sometime.
